Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Scott Dunn pitched seven shutout innings and Jose Vargas had three hits and drove in three runs as the Traverse City Beach Bums picked up their first win of 2013 with a 6-2 victory over the Joliet Slammers on Sunday afternoon.

The Beach Bums got on the board in the third inning as Scott Woodward led off with a single and stole second. Vargas came up and lined a single to center to score Woodward for a 1-0 TC lead. In the fifth, Woodward walked to lead off the inning and once again stole second. Three batters later it was Sean Gusrang's turn as he singled through the right side to plate Woodward for a 2-0 Beach Bums advantage.

Traverse City broke the game open in the sixth as the Beach Bums took advantage of some shoddy defense by Joliet. After Chris Cowell walked to lead off the inning, Andrew Cohn sacrificed him to second. Ryan Still reached on an error by second baseman Nate Wilder, moving Cowell to third. Woodward came up next and grounded a ball up the middle that was also bobbled by Wilder, allowing Cowell to score and Still to come to second. The miscue proved costly as the very next pitch saw Vargas drill a ball into the left-centerfield gap for a double, bringing home both runners and make the score 5-0.

TC would tack on a run in the seventh when Cohn singled home Taylor Wrenn who had doubled to lead off the inning and stolen third.

The runs were more than enough for Dunn who was brilliant, tying a career-best with seven innings. He allowed four runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out five. It was Dunn's 16th win as a Beach Bum, tying him with Brett Bostleman and Tony Casoli for fourth place on the Traverse City all-time wins list.

Traverse City now comes back to Northern Michigan for the Home Opener against Evansville on Tuesday at 7:05 pm. It is a Two-for-Tuesday where fans can get two chairback tickets for the price of one on the day of the game.
