Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters plated seven runs in the seventh inning, and held off a furious Normal CornBelters comeback for an 8-7 win on Sunday night.

First baseman Andrew Clark went 4 for 4 in the victory, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances.

The contest was actually a low scoring game early. Normal took the first inning advantage on a two run double from designated hitter Romulo Ruiz. It would be the only runs the CornBelters would score against Otters left-hander Matt Zielinski who pitched 6.0 innings and retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Evansville scored their first run in the fifth inning on a Frank Martinez groundout and then exploded for seven runs in the next inning. Martinez tied the game on an infield single up the middle and Clark had the go-ahead run score on his double to deep left field.

Ahead 3-2, Evansville would score two more runs in the inning and re-load the bases for infielder Ryan Kresky. Playing in his second game after college, Kresky hit a three-run double to left field, pushing Evansville to an 8-2 lead and recording his first professional hit in the process.

The game wasn't over, however, as reliever Patrick Crider entered the game in the next inning only to see Normal score the next five runs. Caleb Cuevas then came in to maintain the one run lead, passing the game over to closer Eric Massingham in the ninth. Working around a one-out error, Massingham stranded the tying run t third and preserving the Otters 8-7 win.

Evansville is now 1-2 this season as Normal drops to 2-1.

Reliever Coty Saranthus (1-0) is the winning pitcher after throwing a scoreless seventh inning. The loss goes to right-hander Ross Davis who surrendered two runs in 2.0 innings. It is the first save for Massingham this season and his franchise record 44th save with the organization.

Evansville is off tomorrow but begins a three game series on Tuesday at the Traverse City Beach Bums.

First pitch is set for 7:05 pm EDT and fans can listen in to the game on WUEV 91.5 FM. You can also follow the Otters through Facebook or on Twitter.
