Game #3 - Home Game #3 (2-0), (2-0)

Last time out
Chuck Lofgren went six and two third strong innings and Grant DeBruin tallied three hits and three RBI as the Slammers knocked off the Beach Bums by a final score of 6-3 Saturday night. Traverse City got on the board first with a Chase Burch RBI double to score Jose Vargas in the first inning. But Joliet responded with three runs in the second. With the bases loaded, Goose Kallunki singled up the middle. Two runs scored and a third came around when center field Matt Howard misplayed the ball, clearing the bases and putting Joliet up 3-1. A DeBruin two-RBI single in the third inning extended the Joliet lead to 5-1 and he drove in another run with another single in the fifth. Traverse City tried to chip away at the Slammers' 6-1 lead as they tallied one in the seventh and one in the eighth. But Justin Erasmus shut the door in the ninth to earn the save as Joliet won for the second straight night.
For Starters...
Experienced pitcher and Illinois native Brett Zawacki gets the start today for the Slammers. He brings a history of success in affiliated baseball. The right-hander advanced as high as Double-A in the Cardinals organization. St. Louis made Zawacki their 12th round selection out of LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 2007. Last season was Zawacki's first year in the Frontier League.
2-0...
This is the first time the Slammers have started 2-0 in their history. They started 1-1 in 2011 and 1-1 in 2012.
Going for the sweep...
If the Slammers win today it will be the first time they've ever swept the Beach Bums. It would also match their win total from all of last year against Traverse City.
Firsts...
Infielder Grant DeBruin and outfielder Matthew Scruggs both recorded their first professional hits last night. DeBruin also recorded the first three RBI of his career.
Walking the tightrope...
The Beach Bums had baserunners every inning last night but the Slammers were able to hold them to only three runs.
Comeback kids...
The Slammers have had to make a comeback in both games so far this season.
They gone!
The Slammers' pitching staff struck out 14 batters Opening Night, tying the team record for most strikeouts in one game.
A new era...
The Slammers enter the 2013 campaign with an entirely new coaching staff and an almost completely new roster. Manager Mike Breyman enters his first year as the team's skipper while Eric Coleman and Dave Garcia will serve as the team's new pitching and hitting coaches respectively. All three have experience coaching in the Frontier League and Breyman is a former Frontier League Coach of the Year. Coleman has managerial experience in the league with Oakland County. Meanwhile, only six players remain from the 2012 team (Ben Hewett, who played the first part of the year with Joliet, Kyle Maunus, Chase Doremus, Jacob Sanchez, Mike Barsotti and David Christensen). Only Maunus and Hewett remain from the 2011 championship squad.
Injury Report...
OF David Christensen (groin) and LHP David Jensen (shoulder) are currently on the Injured List for Joliet.
Transaction Wire...
The Slammers signed RHP Justin Erasmus on Wednesday and placed Christensen on the DL.
