Miners Edged out at Home

Marion, IL - The Miners and ThunderBolts combined for 20 runs and 24 hits as the Miners fell short to Windy City by a score of 11-9. Three lead changes throughout the course of the game and the Miners ended up on the wrong side. Miners starting pitcher Blake Nation didn't factor in the decision as he pitched five innings and allowed three runs with two strikeouts. He walked five batters and gave up four hits.

The Miners took the lead off ThunderBolts starter Travis Strong in the bottom of the first inning 1-0 as left fielder Gerardo Avila hit a RBI groundout to bring home Tyler Hall who began the inning with a base hit. Windy City answered back with three runs off Nation in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Miners answered back with four runs off Strong in the bottom of third as Gerardo Avila added a RBI triple to score Tyler Hall to bring the Miners within one run. The Miners tied the game at three when Gerardo Avila scored on a ball put in play by Cannon Lester that ThunderBolts right fielder committed an error on. Carlos Mendez hit a triple to score Lester to give the Miners a 4-3 lead and Ken Gregory hit a base hit to score Mendez. The Miners would lead 5-3 heading into the top of the fourth inning.

The Miners added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Curl scored on a wild pitch to give the Miners a 6-3 lead. Windy City tied the game at six with three runs off Miners reliever Matt Royal. Matt Sergey pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball and recorded three strikeouts. The Miners continued to add more runs as they scored three runs off ThunderBolts reliever Evan DaLuca. Jason Ganek hit a base hit and RBI to score short stop Tyler Stubblefield to give the Miners a 7-6 lead. The Miners scored their eighth and ninth runs of the game two RBI base hit by catcher Mario Mercedes to give the Miners a 9-6 lead.

Windy City scored two runs off Miners reliever Reese McGraw in the top of the eighth inning to trim the Miners lead to one run. Miners reliever Drew Bailey gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning to give Windy City a 11-9 lead and eventual win. The Miners would fall to 2-1 on the regular season.

The Miners are off tomorrow and resume play on Tuesday night as they welcome in the Lake Erie Crushers. First pitch is at 7:05 pm at Rent One Park.
