Syracuse Crunch News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Jeff Tambellini extended his five-game points streak and Henri Ikonen tallied his first game-winner of the season as the Syracuse Crunch topped the Rochester Americans, 2-1, tonight at the Blue Cross Arena.

The Crunch earned four of a possible six points while completing their fourth three-in-three of the season. They also advance to 16-14-5-1 and picked up their first victory against the Americans. The Americans are 17-16-2-1 and 2-1 in the 10-game season series.

Kristers Gudlevskis backstopped the Crunch with a 28-save performance. Americans goaltender Robin Lehner turned aside 20 of 22 shots in defeat. Syracuse was unable to convert on their one power play opportunity late in the third period. The penalty kill unit went 3-for-4 on Rochester man-advantages.

Tambellini put the Crunch on the board just 1:31 into the first period. Matthew Peca won the faceoff in the right circle. The puck kicked out for Tambellini to net for his 16th of the season just outside the crease.

The Crunch built a 2-0 lead at the 2:27 mark of the third period. Peca skated the puck into the zone and sent it over for Ikonen to one-time past Lehner. Matt Taormina recorded the secondary assist on the game-winner.

The Americans finally solved Gudlevskis and took away his shutout bid while on the power play halfway through the final frame. With the netminder screened, Jason Akeson fired a slap shot from the top of the right circle off a feed from Jerome Leduc. Mark Pysyk picked up a point with the secondary helper.

Syracuse was able to stop Rochester from making a comeback push and won, 2-1.

The Crunch are back in action when they travel to face the Binghamton Senators on Jan. 13 at 7:05 p.m.
