Springfield Falcons News Release

Providence, RI - The Springfield Falcons lost by a 2-1 score in shootouts against the Providence Bruins Sunday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period much like the night before. The Falcons outshot the Bruins by a 13-8 margin in the first frame. Springfield could not convert on their only power play and headed to the intermission with a majority of a Phil Lane roughing penalty to kill in the beginning of the second period.

The Falcons killed the penalty to start the period but was handed another penalty halfway through the second period. 12 seconds into the power play, Austin Czarnik potted his tenth of the year on a rebound opportunity to break the scoreless drought. Brandon DeFazio and Alexander Khokhlachev assisted on the goal to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 10:08 in the second period. Just 2:02 later, Jordan Szwarz responded with a deflection goal for his third of the season. Justin Hache made the initial shot to tie the game at one. The Falcons continued to outshoot the Bruins with an 11-9 total in the second stanza.

Neither team was able to tally a goal in the third period to force an overtime period. Matthias Plachta came close with a shot from the corner that deflected off Bruins' goaltender Malcolm Subban and into the net. The goal was disallowed ruling goaltender interference. Providence outshot the Falcons 9-7 in the third period. The Falcons dominated the overtime period with seven shots that included 1:30 of a power play. The Bruins forced a shootout with the lone goal scored by Khokhlachev to win the game 3-2. Niklas Treutle made 31 saves that included four in the overtime and one in the shootout. His record moved to 7-9-2. Subban made 41 stops to improve to 10-8-3.

The Falcons return to the MassMutual Center next Friday for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff against the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Teddy Bear Pools and Spas chuck-a-puck grand prize has reached $3,600.
