Crunch Clinch a Spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs
April 5, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - With losses to the Albany Devils and Manchester Monarchs tonight the Syracuse Crunch clinched a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the 11th time in the organization's 19 season history. Over 73 playoff games, Syracuse has a record of 32-31-10, including four individual series wins. The Crunch's most recent playoff appearance was last season and resulted in a Conference Quarterfinals loss to the St. Johns IceCaps.
The Crunch's longest playoff run was during the 1995-1996 season. Syracuse defeated the Binghamton Senators and Baltimore Bandits before losing to the Rochester Americans in the Conference Finals. Syracuse's all-time playoff points leader is Brad Moran, who amassed 28 points (13 goals and 15 assists) in 22 games from 2000-2004.
The Calder Cup playoffs have been a part of the American Hockey League since its beginning 76 years ago. The trophy is named after the National Hockey League's first President, Frank Calder. The 1936-1937 Syracuse Stars won the first Calder Cup championship; however, the first actual Calder Cup trophy was handed out the following season to the Providence Reds. Syracuse was presented the trophy at a ceremony in 1996 in honor of its 1937 championship.
The 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs consist of four rounds: Conference Quarterfinals, Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and Calder Cup Finals. Eight teams in each conference qualify for a spot in the playoffs, with the three division winners earning the top three seeds. The Conference Quarterfinals are a best-of-five series and the three other rounds are all a best-of-seven format.
Single game ticket information for the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs will follow. Tickets for the remaining Syracuse Crunch home games can be purchased either in person at the Crunch Box Office located at the War Memorial on 800 South State Street in Syracuse, or by calling the office at (315) 473- 4444.
