St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The IceCaps grabbed a point with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies Friday night at in front of the 71st consecutive sellout at Mile One Centre.
Greg Scott, fresh out of the penalty box after taking a late minor penalty in regulation, snapped a wrist shot past Mark Dekanich high on the glove side to lift the Marlies to victory. Drew MacIntyre made 23 saves for the visitors.
Dekanich was spectacular for St. John's, making 40 saves and keeping his squad in the game. Eric O'Dell and Kael Mouillierat each had a goal and an assist, extending their recent string of impressive play.
The IceCaps opened the scoring 3:43 into the first on Mouillierat's tenth of the season. O'Dell circled the net and fed Mouillierat with a backhand pass for an easy tap-in and a 1-0 St. John's lead.
Toronto tied it midway through the first on their first power play of the game. Greg McKegg and Spencer Abbott had several whacks at the puck before Ryan Lasch made good on the third attempt to beat a sprawled Dekanich and knot the game at one heading into the first intermission.
The Marlies took the lead early in the second just after the IceCaps successfully killed off two minor penalties. St. John's failed to clear the defensive zone as Jesse Blacker picked off the errant breakout pass and wristed a shot through traffic and past Dekanich, giving the Marlies a 2-1 advantage.
St. John's evened the score at two on O'Dell's 26th of the season at 12:50 of the middle frame. Mouillierat gained the offensive zone and threw a shot on net that was tipped deftly by O'Dell, beating MacIntyre to make it 2-2.
With no scoring in the third, the teams headed to overtime looking for a winner and St. John's had a great chance to take the two points. Scott took a minor penalty for goaltender interference with just 5 seconds left in regulation, and that man advantage carried over into overtime for the IceCaps. However, it was Scott who ended up burning St. John's, scoring the winner after exiting the penalty box.
The IceCaps and Marlies take to the ice again Saturday night at Mile One for their sixth meeting of the season. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com and on 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch live on Rogers TV and on ahllive.com. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. NT with the pregame show getting underway at 7:00.
Notes: St. John's went 0-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill... Ben Maxwell's three-game point streak came to an end... Mark Dekanich lost for just the second time in his last seven starts... Kael Mouillierat had a team-high five shots on goal... Eric O'Dell (48 points) sits just two off the club record for points in a season, set last year by Spencer Machacek (50).
