Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK - Charlie Sarault notched two assists and Steven Whitney scored a goal on his first shot in his professional debut as the Norfolk Admirals (34-30-4-1) topped the Binghamton Senators (40-22-1-6), 2-1, on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
With the win, the Admirals remain two points back of the Hershey Bears for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race with eight games remaining in the regular season. The Bears topped the Syracuse Crunch tonight, 4-1. Hershey holds the first tiebreaker (wins and regulation and overtime).
Sarault, who joined the Admirals last week following the conclusion of his junior career, posted the first professional multiple-point game in just his fourth pro game. Whitney joined the Admirals yesterday after completing his collegiate hockey career at Boston College.
Patrick Maroon netted the eventual game-winning goal for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season.
Frederik Andersen (21-15-1) stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win. Both Norfolk goals were scored on the power play, while the Admirals killed all four Binghamton power plays to extend their streak of opponent power plays killed to 24 straight.
The same teams meet tomorrow night at Scope in the final regular season home game of the season for the Admirals. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
Norfolk took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on the power play. After a series of quick passes, John Mitchell sent a feed from the bottom of the right circle to Whitney in the slot. With his first shot as a professional hockey player, Whitney sent the puck past the right leg of Binghamton goaltender Nathan Lawson and into the net at 8:06.
The Admirals doubled their lead with a five-on-three power play goal midway through the second stanza. Sarault lofted a pass from the bottom of the right circle over a defender's stick and onto the blade of Maroon at the goalmouth. Maroon redirected the pass into the net for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season.
Cole Schneider broke up Andersen's shutout bid with 6:42 remaining in regulation, as he poked the rebound of a Brett Lebda shot out from Andersen's glove and shot it past the goaltender's right leg.
However, that was as close as Binghamton would come, as the Admirals held on for the 2-1 win.
Lawson (10-6-2) st opped 29 of 31 shots in the setback.
Norfolk was 2-for-8 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-for-4.
The same teams meet tomorrow night at Scope in the final regular season home game of the season for the Admirals. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
