
Coyotes Recall Montoya From San Antonio

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have recalled goaltender Al Montoya from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. In addition, the Coyotes have re-assigned goaltender Josh Tordjman to the Rampage.
Montoya, 24, has posted a record of 3-2-0 with a 1.50 goals against average (GAA) and a .944 save percentage (SV%) in his last six appearances for San Antonio, stopping 134 of the 142 shots he has faced in that span. During that stretch, Montoya has not allowed more than two goals in a game. For the season, Montoya has gone 7-17-2 with a 3.23 GAA and a .885 SV% in 29 games with the Rampage this season. Last year, he finished with a record of 8-6-0 with a 2.59 GAA and a .912 SV% in 14 games for San Antonio after being acquired from the New York Rangers on Feb. 26, 2008. Montoya also compiled a 16-8-3 record with a 2.54 GAA and .908 SV% in 31 games for the Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford WolfPack, last season.
Montoya, who was selected by the Rangers in the first round (6th overall) of the 2004 Entry Draft, has posted a record of 81-57-4 with a 2.61 GAA and nine shutouts in 162 career AHL games. He finished the 2006-07 season with a 27-17-0 record and ranked T-3rd in the AHL in shutouts (6), 5th in GAA (2.30) and T-5th in wins (27).
A native of Glenview, Ill., Montoya played four years of collegiate hockey at the University of Michigan where he finished with a career record of 86-29-8. He led the team to the Frozen Four during his freshman year in 2002-03 and was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 2003-04. In 2004, he led Team USA to its first-ever gold medal at the World Junior Championship. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound Montoya was named the tournament's top goaltender after posting a 6-0-0 record with a 1.33 GAA, a .944 SV% and two shutouts.
Tordjman, 23, has posted a record of 21-21-2 with a 2.68 GAA, a .909 SV% and four shutouts in 46 games with San Antonio this season. Since Dec. 1, 2008, Tordjman has collected a 20-11-1 record with a 2.41 GAA and .918 SV% with the Rampage. In two games with the Coyotes this season, the first NHL games of his career, Tordjman posted a record of 0-2-0 with a 4.07 GAA and a .871 SV%.
