Countdown to Face-Off: Kalamazoo Wings vs Wheeling Nailers

The cheering from thousands of school-aged children from all across southwest Michigan will serve as an alarm clock this morning for the Kalamazoo Wings and the Wheeling Nailers during the annual Education Day at Wings Stadium. Today will be the first of three meetings between the teams.

Off to a 1-3-0-1 record to start the season, the K-Wings hit the ice looking to get back to their winning ways. This morning is the second game of a five-game home stand Kalamazoo. The K-Wings dropped the first game of the stand 5-4 in a shootout on Sunday to the Cincinnati Cyclones.

Wheeling travels to Wings Stadium in search of their first road victory of the season. The Nailers, who begin a brief two-game road trip this morning, are 0-2-0-0 on away from the WesBanco Arena. On the season, the Nailers have been outscored 6-2 on the road.

Ponich and Veilleux Debut This morning will be the K-Wings season debut for Brett Ponich and Yannick Veilleux. Both players started the season with the AHL's Chicago Wolves and were reassigned to Kalamazoo yesterday from the St. Louis Blues.

Back to School

Kalamazoo will head back to school this morning when they play Wheeling on Education Day. All-time, Kalamazoo is 11-7-1-1 in morning games, including 7-7-0-1 at Wings Stadium.

Limiting Chances

The K-Wings have done an outstanding job in limiting the scoring opportunities of their opponents. Kalamazoo ranks fifth in the Eastern Conference and ninth overall in the league allowing an average of 28.2 shots a game.

Bootland Nears Milestone Head coach Nick Bootland is closing in on a personal milestone. Bootland's next coaching victory will be the 200th of his career.
