Kane County Cougars News Release
Peoria, Illinois -The Kane County Cougars (10-7) were denied their first series sweep of the season in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-7) on Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park. Andy Pineda's single in the ninth ended the game.
The Cougars grabbed a lead on the second batter of the game. Geraldo Perdomo clubbed his first homer of the year to right field, a solo shot to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. The starting pitching buckled down after the homer. Jackson Goddard twirled five shutout innings for the Cougars, striking out four with no walks and scattering two hits. Quad Cities starter Luis Garcia didn't make another mistake after the first inning long ball. Garcia's day finished after five innings of one-run ball with two hits, six strikeouts and one walk.
The Cougars greeted new Bandit pitcher Matt Ruppenthal in the sixth with two runs, extending the margin to 3-0. Perdomo added to his big afternoon, doubling home Jose Herrera and Tra Holmes.
Starting with the bottom of the sixth, the Bandits slowly chiseled away at the Cougar lead. Ross Adolph doubled with two outs in the sixth frame and came around to score on Jeremy Pena's RBI single. In the seventh, Marty Costes walked with two outs. Jonathan Lacroix doubled to drive him in and make it a one-run game. Pena's second RBI of the day tied the game, 3-3, with a one-out double in the eighth.
Ryan Miller came on to pitch the ninth for the Cougars. After Marty Costes was retired to start the frame, three straight Bandits reached. Lacroix doubled, then Austin Dennis reached on an error by Cougar second baseman Eddie Hernandez. The next batter, Andy Pineda, walked it off with a single to right field.
Miller (0-3) took the loss, while Ruppenthal (1-0) earned the win.
The Cougars have Easter Sunday off before heading to Burlington to start a three-game series on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Follow the action live with Joe Brand on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
