March 25, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince George Cougars News Release
PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club is pleased to announce they have drafted defenceman Zephyr Tangri ('05) and goaltender Dylan Johnson ('05) in the inaugural Western Hockey League (WHL) U.S. Prospects Draft today.
The WHL U.S. Prospects Draft consisted of two rounds, with each team making two draft choices.
With their first pick, 19th overall, the Cougars chose defenceman Zephyr Tangri from the LA Jr. Kings 14U. The rangy defenceman played in 51 games this season and compiled nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points, to go along with 80 penalty minutes. The View Park-Windsor Hill, CA product is listed at 6'1 and 183 lbs.
"He's a big, two-way defenceman, who gets up the ice quickly and can generate offence. Zephyr has a great stick and reads the game extremely well. We felt he was the top defenceman in this draft," commented Cougars' Director of Scouting Bob Simmonds.
With their second pick, 26th overall, the Cougars took 5' 10, 149 lbs. goaltender Dylan Johnson from the Dallas Stars Elite 05's. Johnson played in six games with the Stars in the Elite Major Bantam Hockey League. The Dallas, TX native posted a 5-0-1 (W-L-OTL) record and owned a 1.49 goals against average and 0.935 save percentage. He also had one shutout.
"Dylan is an elite level goalie, with good size already. One of the two best American goalie prospects in his age group. Taking him today will help us focus on skilled positions for the upcoming WHL Bantam Draft in April," stated Simmonds.
The 2020 WHL Bantam Draft is Wednesday, April 22nd. The Cougars have the second, 17th and 22nd overall picks in this year's draft.
