Cougars Score Early But Fall Late at Home

Geneva, IL- The Kane County Cougars dropped the opener of a six-game homestand 12-6 to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays at Elfstrom Stadium Thursday night. The Cougars struck first but the Devil Rays had a seven-run sixth to take control and continue for the victory.

Kane County got two in the second off Devil Rays starter Jarrad Lavergne. Eddie Kim walked and Nick Blasi doubled him in to make it 1-0. Raul Padron followed with a single for a 2-0 game. After Southwest Michigan got four runs in the third against Cougars starter Jared Trout, Blasi doubled again in the fourth and Padron singled to score him for a 4-3 deficit. Trout surrendered a tally in the fifth before leaving in the sixth when three more opponents touched home. J.R. Pickens entered but struggled, giving up four more for a 12-3 game. Relievers Keith Perez, Jose Corchado and Marcus McBeth didn't allow the Devil Rays to score again, but the had already been done.

The Cougars tried to come back, scoring twice in the eighth on Eddie Kim's homer and Kory Wayment's double and once in the ninth from Kim's sacrifice fly to provide the 12-6 final. Trout (2-4) took the loss for the third time in four starts while Lavergne (3-7) got the win for Southwest Michigan. Game two of the series is Friday night at 6:30 CDT. Ryan Ford takes the mound for the Cougars (4-4) against left-hander James Houser for the Devil Rays (4-4).
