Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning and held off the Fort Wayne Wizards 4-3 Thursday night at Memorial Stadium. Timber Rattler starting pitcher Julio Santiago pitched 7-2/3 innings without allowing a run and earned his first Midwest League win. Brandon Green had three hits and two RBI to lead the Rattler offense.
Oswaldo Navarro put the Rattlers (41-37 overall, 2-6 second half) in front with a two-run single in the top of the second inning.
Green made the score 4-0 with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning.
Santiago kept the Wizards (39-39, 1-7) off the scoreboard through the first 7-2/3 innings, but needed help to get out of the eighth. A two-out infield single put two runners and brought Colt Morton to the plate. Morton has nine home runs on the season, but reliever Ivan Blanco got Morton to pop out for the final out of the inning.
Fort Wayne rallied against Blanco in the bottom of the ninth. Tom Vincent led off the inning with a double. Sean Kazmar homered to cut the Rattler lead to 4-2. Blanco got the next two outs, but gave up a triple to Ruben Mora. Rattler closer Craig James entered the game and gave up an RBI single to Chris Kolkhorst and the lead was down to one run.
James got Brian Fryer to ground into a game ending force out for his ninth save of the season.
Game two of the series is Friday night. Jason Snyder (8-6, 4.12ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Vern Sterry (4-2, 3.88) is the scheduled starter for the Wizards. Game time is 6:00pm.
