Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Burlington Bees scored a single run in each of the final three innings on their way to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the Peoria Chiefs in front of 2,710 Thursday night at O'Brien Field. The loss puts the Chiefs back at .500 at 4-4 in the second half, 39-39 overall.
With the game tied at 8-8 in the top of the 9th inning, Burlington right fielder Brian McFall hit a one-out home run just over the wall in left-center field off Chiefs reliever Tim Layden. The home run gave the Bees a 9-8 lead that would hold up as the final score.
Burlington scored in the top of the 1st inning before the Chiefs stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Patterson lined a double to left on a hit and run play to score Sam Fuld from first base. Two batters later, Luis Montanez hit a towering two-run home run down the left field line that bounced across Jefferson Street to give the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.
Burlington scored twice in the 3rd to tie the game before the Chiefs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double from Anthony Granato to score Ryan Harvey and Aaron Sisk for a 5-3 lead.
The lead changed hands two more times before the Bees tied the game in the top of the 8th inning. Eddie Solis started the inning with a walk against Chiefs reliever Drew Dickson. Kenard Springer replaced Solis as a pinch runner and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Irving Falu for an 8-8 tie.
Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the 9th, Montanez drove a ball to deep center but Cody Cure made a catch over his shoulder on the run to keep Montanez off the base paths. Sisk and Granato went quietly against Bees reliever Chad Blackwell to end the game.
Blackwell retired all five Chiefs he faced in picking up the win. Layden took the loss for the Chiefs, his first of the season to fall to 1-1. Peoria starter Chris Shaver went five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits in the no-decision.
