June 30, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Beloit, WI- The Dayton Dragons (5-3, 35-43) gave up an early run to the Beloit Snappers (4-4, 37-41) without the benefit of a base hit, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, watched a two run lead slip away in the seventh and eighth, rallied with two down in the ninth to retake the lead and then held on in the bottom of the inning to win the first game of a four game series at Pohlman Field 4-3 in thrilling fashion.

The Snappers got on the board in the bottom half of the second inning off Dragons starter Camilo Vazquez (ND), without the benefit of a base hit. A leadoff walk issued by Vazquez, one of four on the night in his 4.0 innings of work, put Jeremy Pickrel on first. Pickrel stole second and moved to third on a ground out. With one down, Mark Zamojc chopped a ball to first base that scored Pickrel as the Dragons traded the run for the out. Vazquez finished his night without allowing a hit and striking out five Beloit batters.

Dayton picked up the games first two hits in the top of the second inning with singles from Tonys Gutierrez and Chris Kroski. Despite the pair of hits, the Dragons were not able to score any runs off Beloit starter Kyle Waldrop (ND). In the Dayton fourth, Gutierrez and Kroski would prove big for the Miami Valley's team as the duo combined to knock home three runs. Gutierrez picked up his second single of the night, a knock to center that plated B.J. Szymanski, who walked and moved to second on a ground out. With two down, Kroski crushed a Waldrop offering over the wall in right center for his second HR of the season. The two run shot scored Gutierrez and gave a 3-1 Dragons lead.

Carlos Bohorquez (ND) kept the Snappers off the scoreboard as Dayton maintained the 3-1 lead into the seventh. Beloit finally picked up its first hit of the ball game with two out in the sixth inning on a double by David Winfree. The Snappers picked up single runs in the seventh inning to get within one at 3-2. A two out RBI single off Bohorquez in the seventh by Luke Hughes scored Tarrence Patterson who doubled with two down. Bohorquez tossed 3.0 innings of four hit baseball, allowing one run, one walk and one hit batsman. The right hander struck out five on the night.

The Dragons could get nothing going against Waldrop after the fourth inning. Before departing after the eighth inning, Waldrop retired the last 13 he faced before giving way to Kevin Culpepper (LP, 4-5) in the ninth. Waldrop pitched 8.0 innings of four hit baseball, striking out three and walking one. The Snappers started allowed three runs, all of which were earned.

Brad Cherry (WP, 1-0) picked up his first win in a Dragons uniform, despite surrendering the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one down and Pickrel on a first base following a lead off single, Beloit picked up back-to-back singles, the second in the pair of hits by Kyle Feiner scored Pickrel with the equalizer and the game was tied at 3-3.

Dayton made a winner of Cherry in the top half of the ninth inning off Culpepper, starting a rally out of nothing with two down and no one on base. Gutierrez picked up his third hit of the night with a single to left center and kept the inning alive for Cody Strait. Strait who powered the Dragons in Fort Wayne on the road last weekend with eight RBI in four games, cam through again with a gap double to left center that scored Gutierrez from first and gave Dayton a 4-3 lead.

Blake Hendley (SV, 10) wasn't perfect but still picked up the save as he retired the Snappers in the ninth. Deacon Burns picked up a one out opposite field double to left center but was stranded at second as Dayton's all-star stopper got a pair of fly outs to center field to close out the game.

The Dragons and Snappers continue the four game series at Pohlman Field on Friday night at 8:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM. LHP Philippe Valiquette gets the start for the Dragons, while Fort Wayne will counter with RHP Anthony Swarzak.
