Cougars Roll to Fourth Straight Win

Midland, Mich. - Trevor Cahill chipped in another quality start on the mound, and the Kane County Cougars' offense knocked out 10 hits and took 10 walks en route to an 8-1 victory Friday night over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 5,623 fans at Dow Diamond. The Cougars have won four in a row, nine of 11 and 11 of 16.

Cahill (7-4) limited the Loons to one run over 6 2/3 innings, scattered five hits, walked three and struck out six while notching his seventh quality start in nine outings. Then Scott Moore worked the final 2 1/3 innings with two-hit shutout work.

The Cougars offense, after stranding seven runners through five innings against Great Lakes starter Steven Johnson, broke through in the six against Thomas Melgarejo (4-7) down 1-0. Todd Johnson smoked a two-out, bases-loaded double off the fence in right-center to make it 3-1, Mike Massaro doubled home Johnson for a 4-1 count and Jermaine Mitchell singled in Massaro for a 5-1 Cougars lead. Mitchell took a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, and the Cougars scored two unearned runs in the ninth for the 8-1 final.

Game 2 of the four-game series is Saturday night at 6:05 CT. Travis Banwart (0-0) will pitch for the Cougars (19-20) against Clayton Kershaw (7-5) of the Loons (12-27).
