Peoria Chiefs News Release

Lansing, MI - Five Peoria Chiefs pitchers combined a weird two-hitter as the offense provided early support in a 6-2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night. The Chiefs improve to 24-16 on the half and stay in the top playoff spot in the standings despite walking 10 batters on the night.

With two outs in the first inning the Chiefs jumped on Lansing starter Nate Starner. Jim Adduci clubbed his second homer of the season out onto Cedar Street down the right field line for a 1-0 lead. Derek Schermerhorn followed with a double to left and scored on a double off the bat of Russ Canzler. Wellington Castillo made it 3-0 with a single to right but was thrown out at second to end the inning after Canzler scored.

Peoria starter Jose Pina got through a perfect first inning before walking the first three batters he faced in the second. After the third walk, Pina grabbed his right elbow and left the game. Left-hander Chris Siegfried came on with the bases loaded and nobody out. He struck out Matt Lane and then got a fielders choice for the second out. A two-out bases loaded walk to Jonathan Diaz but the Lugnuts on the board before the Chiefs got out of the inning.

With one out in the third, Siegfried walked three straight batters to load the bases again. This time, the Chiefs got out of the jam unscathed with a lineout and flyout to end the inning. Peoria knocked Starter out of the game in the fifth inning. Nate Samson led off with a hustle double and scored on a Leon Johnson single for a 4-1 lead. Johnson moved to second on an error and scored when Darwin Barney tripled to deep left.

Jayson Ruhlman relieved Siegfried in the fourth and retired the first seven batters he faced before walking Yuber Rodriguez with one out in the sixth. After a strikeout of Matt Lane, Jonathan Baksh doubled into left-center for the Lugnuts first hit of the game. Rodriguez scored on the play to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-2 before Ruhlman retired Scott Campbell and end the inning.

Peoria scored their final run in the eighth inning against the Lugnuts bullpen. Barney led off with a single and went to third on a one-out hit by Schermerhorn. Lansing intentionally walked Canzler before Castillo popped out to second. Ronald Lowe relieved Adam Rogers and walked Clark Hardman to force in a run.

Pina walked three and struck out one while allowing one run in one inning of work. Siegfried struck out one and walked four in two hitless innings. Ruhlman (5-1) picks up the win while striking out a career high six batters. The lefty gave up one run and two hits over three innings. Jose Ceda struck out four and walked one in his two hitless innings while Alex Maestri struck out three and walked one in the ninth.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Jayson Ruhlman (LHP) - Ruhlman set a new career high with six strikeouts in three innings of work. He allowed two hits, one walk and one run while picking up the win.

Notes...Before Adduci's first inning blast, the Chiefs hadn't had a homer by a non-rehabbing player in 15 games and 128 innings...They also hadn't led in 27 innings...The game originally appeared to be a one-hitter but a scoring change after the game gave Lansing's Diaz a 6th inning single and took away an error from Schermerhorn...Peoria's last one-hitter took four pitchers on May 1, 2005 as Sean Gallagher, Walt Nolen, Paul Schappert and Jerry Blevins beat Kane County 1-0 at O'Brien Field...The Chiefs struck out 16 on opening night at Wisconsin and they walked 10 against the Rattlers on June 28th...The four game series continues Saturday at 7:05 PM EST as the Chiefs send RH Marco Carrillo (4-4, 4.45) against Lansing's RH Graham Godfrey (6-6, 4.61)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 5:50 PM Peoria time online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
