Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

With a chance to move atop the Western Division standings with a victory, the Swing of the Quad Cities fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks 7-6 in 14 innings at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium on Thursday night in South Bend, Indiana.

The Swing (22-15, 60-47) twice battled back for the lead only to see it disappear at the hands of the Silver Hawks (20-18, 54-55) and Daniel Perales, who pestered Quad Cities with five hits and three runs scored in the game.

One strike away from victory in the bottom of the ninth, Quad Cities' closer Kenny Maiques faced South Bend slugger Perales with a 6-5 lead. Perales grounded the Maiques offering up the middle as Gerardo Parra raced for home. Shortstop Christian Lopez threw the ball to catcher Nick Derba in plenty of time, but the ball fell out of Derba's glove as the tying run slid across the plate.

The run would be unearned, as an error was charged to Lopez and Maiques was saddled with his fifth blown save of the season. Maiques is just two saves away from tying the all-time Quad Cities record (26).

The game tied once again, the Swing and Silver Hawks would play on until Perales sent the South Bend fans home happy with a solo home run in the bottom of the 14th inning. The deciding hit came off Quad Cities pitcher Armando Carrasco (4-2), who gutted out four innings in his longest appearance of the season.

Seven innings earlier, Quad Cities and South Bend were deadlocked at four when Jose Ramirez led off the top of the seventh with a base hit and stole second base, his first steal attempt in 22 games with the Swing. Antone DeJesus hid his intentions to bunt long enough that he had time to race down to first base after pushing the ball across the infield. The base knock extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest of any Swing player this season.

Perhaps it was a master plan by the South Bend staff to lull the Quad Cities offense to sleep with pitch after pitch out of the strike zone in the early innings, only to shut them down with solid relief for the final seven frames. Silver Hawks pitchers walked five through the first four innings, including three passes to Jaime Landin, who picked up a hit for his sixth consecutive game.

Craig Pfautz (3-3) was the winner for the Silver Hawks as part of a relief staff that held Quad Cities to only two hits while striking out nine over the final seven innings.
