Walks, Big Sixth Inning Hurt Loons in 8-1 Loss

Trevor Cahill kept the Great Lakes Loons offense quiet on Friday night as they lost to the Kane County Cougars in front of 5,623 fans by a score of 8-1.

The Loons jumped out to an early lead in the ballgame thanks to a Matt Berezay RBI-single scoring Juan Apodaca to make it 1-0.

The score would stay the same until the sixth when things fell apart for the Loons. The Cougars jumped out to a huge lead thanks to a five-run outburst in an inning highlighted by a three-run double from left-fielder Todd Johnson to make it a 5-1 ballgame. All five runs were scored off Loons reliever Thomas Melgarejo giving Kane County a lead they would never relinquish.

The Loons have scored only three runs in their last 23 innings of play dating back to their game on August 1 against Clinton.

Steven Johnson had arguably his best start of the season Friday night going five scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out two. Melgarejo (4-7) picked up his seventh loss of the season after surrendering the all five of the Cougar sixth inning runs. Miguel Sanfler worked two innings in mop-up duty allowing three runs (one earned) and four walks and hit a batter as well.

Loons pitchers walked 10 batters in the contest. It was seventh time this season the Loons had walked 10 or more batters in a game.

Cahill (7-4) only allowed one run in 6.2 innings to pick up his seventh win of the season. Scott Moore pitched the final 2.1 innings in mop-up duty to complete the ballgame.

The Loons-Cougars series continues from Dow Diamond Saturday night. Game time is 7:05pm. Dodgers top prospect Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to get the start for the Loons. The Saturday Nights Live series continues featuring a pre-game band and entertainment throughout the game.
