Kane County Cougars News Release

BURLINGTON, IA - One day after stumbling to an 8-2 loss, the Kane County Cougars were back in control of the Burlington Bees, pounding the opposition in an 8-4 victory Thursday afternoon in front of 1,981 at Community Field. Jason Christian launched a three-run homer during a six-run third inning, and Shawn Haviland posted the Cougars' first quality start of the season with six innings of solid work. If the Cougars win the finale Friday night they will secure a fourth straight series win to start the campaign.

Juan Nunez scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third for the game's first run. The tally was charged to starter Bryan Casey (0-3), who left early due to injury. Then Christian homered off Derrick Saito with David Thomas and Matt Ray aboard to make it 4-0, and Franklin Hernandez tripled home Steve Kleen and scored on a single by Mitch LeVier for a 6-0 Cougars advantage.

Haviland (1-0) allowed just two runs over six innings and yielded two hits, walked one and fanned seven in the victory. He'd entered the sixth inning in his first two outings, and this time became the first Cougar to complete six frames. Jamie Richmond allowed two runs in the seventh, but Matt Ray's two-run ninth-inning single put the Cougars ahead, 8-4, and that became the final. Leonardo Espinal and Jose Guzman each contributed a scoreless relief inning.

The Cougars (9-4) and Bees (3-9) conclude their four-game series Friday night at 6:30 CDT. Pedro Figueroa (1-0, 4.50) will face Luis Cota (0-1, 3.60), and the Cougars are back home Saturday to start a 10-game homestand.
