Loons Shutout Dragons 10-0

Dayton, Ohio-Ethan Martin and Luis Garcia combined on an eight-hit shutout and Jaime Pedroza collected three hits including a two-run home run as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 10-0 on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The loss was the Dragons 11th straight and dropped their record to 1-12 on the year.

Great Lakes wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring twice before a batter was retired in the first inning. Dee Gordon began the game with a single to center field and Pedroza followed with a home run to left, his first of the year, to make it 2-0.

In the third, Great Lakes scored again. Gordon doubled to left and scored on a single to right by Pedroza to make it 3-0. Pedroza eventually scored from third on a two-out double by Kyle Russell to put Great Lakes ahead 4-0.

The Loons scored three more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-0 and then tacked on three more in the sixth, keyed by a two-run home run by Kyle Russell, to close out the scoring.

The Dragons had base runners in all nine innings and collected eight hits but advanced only one runner as far as third base. Kyle Day and Kevin Coddington each collected two hits for Dayton. Coddington, who extended his hitting streak to five straight games, raised his batting average to .409.

Dragons starting pitcher Curtis Partch (0-2) suffered the loss, working three innings and allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Dragons and Loons meet in the finale of the four game series at Fifth Third Field on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Dayton's Oscar Castro (0-1, 6.75) will start against Justin Miller (1-1, 2.84) of Great Lakes. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 708 on most Time Warner cable systems).

Notes: Dragons outfielder Dave Sappelt went 0 for 3 as his hitting streak ended at nine games...The 10-0 loss came after the Dragons had lost back-to-back one-run games to the Loons on Tuesday and Wednesday.
