South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Lansing, MI - With a four-run 7th inning in game two, the Silver Hawks rallied to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Lansing Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park Thursday night. The Silver Hawks took game one 9-5, and then rallied for the 5-4 victory in game two.
The Silver Hawks were trailing 4-1 entering the final inning of game two when the bats woke up and pounded out four runs on five hits. After a walk and a single, Nelson Gomez provided an RBI single off of Hunter Moody (ND) to make it 4-2. Another single loaded the bases, and Mike Barbara (LP, 0-2) was brought in from the bullpen.
After a strikeout for the first out, Barbara allowed a single to Victor Estevez. One run scored, but Gomez was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Yohermyn Chavez to preserve the one run lead for Lansing. With two outs and runners at first and second, Reynaldo Navarro lined a 2-2 pitch off the wall in right, bringing in both runners for the 5-4 lead and eventual victory.
In game one, Jake Elmore blasted a three run homer in the fifth inning to put the Silver Hawks in front 5-3. After Lansing tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, Elmore came through again in the sixth with a two-run double for the 7-5 lead.
Alberto Diaz also homered in game one, his second of the year. Game one marked the second time this season that Diaz and Elmore each homered in the same game. Gomez added a homer in game two to join Diaz and Elmore as the only Hawks hitters with homers on the season.
Game one starter Wade Miley (ND) remains without a decision on the year. In 4.2 innings, Miley allowed four runs on seven hits but did not factor in the outcome due to the game being tied after he departed. Justin Mace (ND) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to close out game one.
The four game series concludes Friday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Michigan. Scheduled starters for the series finale are RHP Brett Moorhouse (0-1, 5.9 ERA) for South Bend and RHP Ryan Koch (0-0, 16.20 ERA) for Lansing. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 1620 AM WPNT The Point and online at www.silverhawks.com.
