West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN- The West Michigan Whitecaps erupted for ten runs on fifteen hits, and pitcher Mauricio Robles was nearly unhittable Thursday night in a 10-2 victory over the Fort Wayne Tincaps. In perhaps their best all-around game of the season, the âCaps had eight starters get a least one hit while Robles tossed seven innings of one-hit ball. The Whitecaps have now won two of the three games played in the series.
The win improves the Whitecaps season record to 9-3. Fort Wayne loses for the second time this season and the second time to the âCaps. They're now 11-2.
West Michigan started the scoring in the first as Brent Wyatt came home on an RBI ground-out by Brandon Douglas.
The second inning saw the first homerun of the year for âCaps infielder Jordan Lennerton, a two-run shot to left, to make the score, 3-0.
A walk and a single would set up Lennerton again in the third as he delivered an RBI single. Luis Salas immediately followed with another RBI single, and Lennerton eventually came home on Tincaps' throwing error for a âCaps lead of 6-0.
In the fourth, West Michigan's Wyatt led off with a triple and scored on Jordan Newton's RBI single. Newton would race home on Bryan Pounds' sacrifice fly for a 8-0 advantage.
Luis Palacios of the âCaps drove the first pitch he saw of the fifth inning over the left field wall for his first long ball of the year to up the score to 9-0.
Still on fire at the plate, the Whitecaps pushed another run across in the seventh when Newton's double-play ball brought in Chao-Ting Tang who had doubled.
Fort Wayne struck for two runs in the eighth on Daniel Robertson's RBI ground-out and Sawyer Carroll's run-scoring double.
Whitecaps' starter Mauricio Robles (2-0) was dominating all night long. The southpaw threw seven innings, allowing one hit, no runs, walking three, and striking out eight batters. Fort Wayne starter Simon Castro (0-1) takes the loss.
The series finale is set for Friday night at 7:05, at Parkview Field.
