Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.-The Burlington Bees jumped out to an early advantage and held on for a big win over the Kane County Cougars, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Addison Russell started the ballgame for the Bees (67-66, 35-29) and doubled into the right field corner on the first pitch of the contest from Kyle Smith (4-3). Russell scored when Max Muncy cracked a double off the wall in center field, giving the Bees a 1-0 advantage. Russell was in the mix again in the second as he singled home Aaron Shipman, putting the Bees up by a pair.
Smith settled in from there as he worked through five innings while striking out eight. Blake Hassebrock (2-1) scattered seven hits over six frames as he wiggled in and out of trouble all night. Kane County (66-68, 32-32) had men on base in every inning except for the fourth but couldn't punch anyone home. They went 0-for-6 in the contest with runners in scoring position.
Burlington added to their lead in the top of the seventh with a run off Cole White. Russell walked and hustled to third base on a double down the third base line from Sam Roberts. When Chris Elder threw into second base from left field, the ball got away, allowing Russell to come home. Justin Trapp finally put the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the ninth with his 11th home run against Jose Macias (S, 9), who finished the contest.
The Cougars are at Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday when they take on the Quad Cities River Bandits at 7:00 p.m. You can listen to the broadcast on www.kccougars.com, beginning with Cougars on Deck at 6:45 p.m. Right-hander Aaron Brooks (9-12) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Jhonny Polanco (0-0).
