CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels combined early scoring with dominant pitching to shutout the Beloit Snappers 5-0 on Tuesday night. The Kernels scored 3 runs in the 1st inning, giving Ryan Crowley plenty of support on the mound.
Ryan Crowley (2-6) went 7 scoreless innings, allowing only 7 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1. Junior Carlin came on and pitched a perfect 2 innings, striking out 4 of the 7 hitters he faced.
The Kernels took an early 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Zach Borenstein's RBI double plated Alex Yarbrough to put the Kernels on the board. With 2 outs, Borenstein scored when Gary Mitchell reached on a fielding error by Snappers 3rd baseman A.J. Pettersen. Mitchell stole 2nd base and came home on Zach Wright's RBI double.
The Kernels extended their lead to 4-0 in the 4th inning when Alex Yarbrough's RBI single to left plated a sliding Kevin Moesquit. Andy Workman's 11th home run of the season gave the Kernels a 5-0 lead in the 7th inning. Matt Tomshaw started for the Snappers and went 5 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 1. Corey Kimes allowed 1 run over 2 innings in relief. Tim Atherton pitched 1 scoreless inning.
