Chiefs Fall To Timber Rattlers Tuesday Evening

Peoria, IL - In their final game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 2012, the Peoria Chiefs fell by the score of 4-1 Tuesday evening at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss, which eliminates the Chiefs from playoff contention, moves them to 27-37 in the second half and 62-71 overall. Wednesday evening the Chiefs will open their final home series with a three-game set against the Cedar Rapids Kernels starting at 6:30.

The Chiefs jumped on the board in the bottom of the second against David Goforth. Jorge Soler walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a balk. After Saunders struck out, Jacob Rogers reached on an error by Adrian Williams at short that allowed Soler to score the first run of the ballgame.

Wisconsin tied the game against Wellington Cruz in the top of the fifth. Mike Garza started the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lance Roenicke. Rafael Neda singled to put men on the corners and Carlos George brought home Garza with groundout to second tying the game at 1-1.

The Timber Rattlers grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth. With Justin Berg on the mound, Ben McMahan and Ramirez singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Garza laced a single to left bringing home McMahan and giving Wisconsin their first lead of the series. Chadwin Stang came in to pinch run for Ramirez, and was thrown out at third on a double steal attempt for out number one. Roenicke reached on an error by Wes Darvill allowing Garza to score giving Wisconsin a 3-1 lead. Austin Reed was brought in from the bullpen and his first pitch was a wild pitch allowing Roenicke to move to second. Neda grounded out moving Roenicke to third and another error by Darvill on a George groundball allowed him to score, extending Wisconsin's lead to 4-1.

In his first Chiefs appearance since June 4, Ben Wells allowed two hits and one walk over two scoreless innings. Cruz allowed one run on three hits and no walks while striking out four over five innings of work. Berg (0-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out a pair over 1 1/3 innings. Reed pitched a scoreless 2/3 innings.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Wellington Cruz (P) - Cruz was stellar in relief of Ben Wells on Tuesday. The southpaw allowed just one run on three hits and no walks while striking out four in five innings of relief.

Notes: Tuesday's loss officially eliminates the Chiefs from playoff contention...The Chiefs have now missed the playoffs in three straight years, and six out of the last eight seasons...Tuesday was the first appearance for Wells in a Chiefs uniform since June 4 at Kane County...June 4 was also the last start for Wells (pitched one inning in Mesa on August 22)...The two innings mark the shortest start for Wells in his career as he rehabs from an arm injury...Tuesday was the first time this season Wells has not recorded a strikeout...Ranging back to May 30 against Burlington, Wells has not allowed a run over his last 7 1/3 innings of work for Peoria in three starts...The five innings pitched by Cruz is the most he's thrown since June 29 with Boise (five innings)...Cruz has struck out four in back-to-back appearances...Two of Goforth's Midwest League leading eight balks have come against Peoria this season...DeVoss has been hit by a pitch a team-leading 18 times this season...In his last three games, Rogers is 5-for-11 (.456) with two homeruns and four RBI...The Chiefs have played 14 straight games of at least two hours and 30 minutes...The Chiefs will open a three-game series, the final home series of the season, Wednesday evening against Cedar Rapids with first pitch at 6:30 p.m...Wednesday will feature $.25 cent hot dogs as well as $1 dollar sodas and ice cream sandwiches...The Chiefs will send RH Yao-Lin Wang (4-4, 3.28) to the mound against LH Michael Johnson (4-6, 4.94)...The broadcast can be heard starting with the pre-game show at 6:15 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.
