Burlington Bees News Release
GENEVA, Ill. (8/27/12) - The Burlington Bees (66-66, 34-29) struggled to string together hits in their 4-to-0 loss to the Kane County Cougars (66-67, 32-31) on Monday. The Bees had eight hits, but only had one hit in nine at bats with runners in scoring position.
As has been the case most of the second half of the season, the Bees couldn't give Drew Granier run support to take advantage of his strong performance.
Granier struck out the first two batters before he allowed a walk to Daniel Mateo and a single to Dean Espy on a hit-and-run play. The Cougars scored two runs on a double by Michael Antonio to take an early 2-to-0 lead in the first.
But the Bees' ace settled down nicely and followed the first inning with five scoreless frames. Overall, Granier (11-9) pitched six innings and only allowed three hits, two earned runs, and two walks. The right-hander also had nine strikeouts and leads the league with 155 punch-outs.
The Bees had several chances to come back and win late in the game. Douglas Landaeta led off the sixth inning with a double and reached third base when the next pitch went wild. But three Bees bat- ters couldn't move Landaeta an inch closer to the plate in the sixth.
Nick Rickles led off the following inning with a double, but once again the Bees couldn't bring the run- ner in scoring position around to score. The Bees actually had their leadoff hitter reach in five of the nine frames.
David Mota pitched two innings out of the pen and allowed two runs between the seventh and eighth. The Bees are now just 5-12 against the Cougars and 2-7 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
The Bees ask Blake Hassebrock (1-1) to give the club another strong start in game four. The first pitch of Tuesday's game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
