Free Fall Continues against Bowling Green
August 28, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (65-68, 30-33) dropped their fourth consecutive game Monday, falling 11-5 to the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Coveleski Stadium. Faint playoff hopes remain for the Silver Hawks who sit four games back of the wildcard leading Fort Wayne TinCaps with seven games to play.
Right-hander Reinaldo Lopez (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for the Hot Rods, allowing one earned run on four hits over 4.1 innings. Southpaw Keith Hessler (2-4) took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs on five hits over three innings. Stayton Thomas worked the final three innings and snagged his fifth save.
The Silver Hawks have struggled to keep pace with the Hot Rods who have posted 31 runs in the first three games of the series. The Silver Hawks have lost seven of their last eight games, including three straight against the Hot Rods.
Chris Ellison, Sean Jamieson and Raul Navarro each tallied two hits for the Silver Hawks.
In the third inning the Hot Rods scored five runs and sent 10 men to the plate and secured a lead they would not relinquish.
The Silver Hawks led 3-1 after an inning and 4-2 after two innings, the only leads the Silver Hawks have had in the entire series.
Juniel Querecuto and Ben Kline each notched a pair of hits for the Hot Rods while Alejandro Segovia finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Right-hander J.R. Bradley worked four innings out of the bullpen and allowed three earned runs on four hits over four innings. Frank Santana allowed an earned run on three hits over two frames.
The Silver Hawks and Hot Rods play the final game of a four-game series Wednesday at Coveleski Stadium. Left-hander Andrew Barbosa (2-4, 4.78) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Roberto Gomez (9-3, 2.54). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.
