Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, IN - Matt Rice drove in two runs to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (40-24, 78-56) to a 6-4 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (30-34, 65-69) on Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The win gives the Hot Rods their 78th of the season, which sets the single-season wins record for the four-year franchise. Jake Hager also added an RBI-double, as the Hot Rods completed a four-game series sweep with their eighth straight victory away from Bowling Green Ballpark.
Continuing a common theme in the series, the Hot Rods struck for an early outburst at the plate. On Tuesday night, Bowling Green scored three times in the top of the third inning and never looked back. Silver Hawk starter Andrew Barbosa walked the bases loaded with one out, and Juniel Querecuto scored the first run on a wild pitch. Taylor Motter scampered home on the same play when catcher Zach Jones' throw was then wild at the plate. Hager then drove home his team-leading 70th RBI of the season to cap the three-run frame.
In a 4-3 game in the top of the eighth, Rice came to the plate with runners at second and third and one out. The former WKU catcher snuck a ball up the middle through a drawn-in infield to drive in both runners to give Bowling Green the 6-3 advantage. The two insurance runs proved to be too much for the Silver Hawks to overcome in the latter stages of the game.
Andrew Bellatti allowed a lone unearned run in his two innings of relief and eventually earned the win. Austin Hubbard worked a clean ninth inning to record his 22nd save of the season, extending his single-season franchise record, and secure the four-game series road sweep.
The seven-game trip, the final road trek of the season, continues on Wednesday night with the first of a three-game set with the Lake County Captains (Future Indians) at 6:00 PM CDT from Classic Park in Eastlake, OH. Bowling Green will give the start to LHP Ryan Carpenter (11-7, 4.13), while the Captains will counter with (4-7, 3.30).
