Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - A four-run bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Kane County Cougars over the Fort Wayne TinCaps with an 8-5 victory on Thursday night from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to open a three-game series and six-game homestand.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Cougars (8-6) loaded the bases against two Fort Wayne (4-10) pitchers. Michael Kelly (0-2) left the contest after surrendering a single to Jin-Ho Shin and walking Tim Ferguson. Matt Stites entered and coughed up a single to Justin Trapp which loaded the bases for Danny Mateo. Mateo quickly unloaded the bags, knocking home three with a triple to the right-field corner. Mateo also scored on a base hit by Michael Antonio to put the Cougars up by three.
Nick Graffeo (S, 3) worked a scoreless ninth inning to finish the contest after Santiago Garrido (2-0) tossed four frames without allowing an earned run. The only tally to come home off Garrido crossed the plate after a throwing error by Shin. Five errors were committed in the contest by Kane County which matched a season-high.
Murray Watts booted a bouncing ball in the top of the second to give the TinCaps their first run, but he homered in the bottom of the second to take that run back. Brooks Pounders started for the Cougars and fanned six over four innings while allowing seven hits.
The Cougars take on the TinCaps at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday night. Right-hander Aaron Brooks (2-0) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Cody Hebner (1-0).
