Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Great Lakes Loons 11-4 Thursday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium as a seven- run fifth inning proved to be too much for the hosts to overcome. The Chiefs committed four errors and fall to 6-8 on the year heading into the second game of the series on Friday night..
A two-out double by Jesse Bosnik off of Chiefs starter Ben Wells gave the Loons their first baserunner in the top of the second. The next batter Devin Shines seized the opportunity, lacing an RBI double to left field to give Great Lakes an early 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs wouldn't trail for long as they strung together a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of the inning against Gustavo Gomez. Taylor Davis singled off the glove of Justin Boudreaux, diving at third base. Wes Darvill just missed his first career home run but settled for a RBI triple off the elevated wall in right field to tie the score at 1-1.
The Chiefs continued hitting Gomez in the third as Paul Hoilman connected on a one-out double to right. Oliver Zapata laced what appeared to be an RBI triple down the right field line as Hoilman scored for a 2-1 Chiefs lead. Zapata reached third standing, but was then tossed out trying to retreat to second as he missed second base while sprinting for a triple. With the Chiefs leading 2-1 Taiwan Easterling singled and Taylor Davis walked but the base running mistake prevented Peoria from adding to the lead.
In the top of the fourth, it was the Loons turn to regain their lead. A one-out infield single by Scott Schebler off the glove of Wells preceded an RBI double by Pratt Maynard to tie the score at 2-2. Great Lakes made it 3-2 when the Bosnik bounced a grounder to first that Ryan Cuneo was unable to field as it skipped into right allowing Maynard to score.
The Loons added to their lead in the fifth thanks to some shaky defense by the Chiefs. Kevin Taylor reached on an error by Zeke DeVoss and Delvis Morales beat out a bunt single with Taylor advancing to third on an errant flip by Cuneo. James Baldwin singled to left to make it 4-2 and Boudreaux tried to sacrifice bunt but was safe at first as no Chiefs infielder covered the bag. Joe Winker walked to force in a run and Schebler made it 6-2 with a single. Maynard doubled to right as two runs scored for an 8-2 lead before a ground out plated Schebler. Kyler Burke relieved Wells but committed an error covering first base as Maynard scored for a 10-2 Loons lead.
The Chiefs loaded the bases in the sixth but came away with just one run. With one out Darvill and Brad Zapenas collected back-to-back singles. Pin-Chieh Chen walked with two outs and Cuneo drove in his 11th run in his last five games to cut the deficit to 10-3. The Loons got that one run back in the eighth. Another infield single for Great Lakes left Baldwin on first with one out. Baldwin was brought home by Boudreaux's RBI triple as the Loons took an 11-3 lead. The Chiefs tacked on a final run in the eighth on a Loons error to close out the scoring at 11-4.
Wells (0-1) went 4 2/3 innings allowing 10 runs, six earned, on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three. Burke went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits while recording four strikeouts. Austin Reed came in to finish the ninth, hurling 2/3 of an inning with one walk and one strikeout.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Brad Zapenas (3B) - The Chiefs third baseman reached base all four times he stepped to the plate Thursday. Zapenas finished 2-for-2 on the night with two singles, two walks, and a run scored in the losing effort.
