PEORIA, IL - Pratt Maynard had three hits - including two doubles - and three RBIs and the Great Lakes Loons used a seven-run fifth inning Thursday night to power the team to their largest victory of the season, 11-4 over the Peoria Chiefs.
Center fielder James Baldwin, who entered the game just 1-for-30 to begin the season, recorded two hits and drove in his first run of the season. Another early season straggler, Justin Boudreaux, had two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run.
Every Loons player in the game reached base and all but Joe Winker and Kevin Taylor recorded at least one hit.
The Loons' 13 hits and 11 runs were both season highs. It was the Loons' first win of the season by more than one run.
The Chiefs managed 12 hits in the game, but stranded 14 runners on base and had three more thrown out on the bases, including two at home plate. They also committed four errors in the game, including three in the Loons' seven-run fifth.
Gustavo Gomez started for the Loons put a heavy pitch load limited him to just four innings. Ryan O'Sullivan (1-2) worked the next three to record the win. Mike Thomas and Yimi Garcia worked single innings to get the final six outs.
Peoria starter Ben Wells was charged with all but one of Peoria's 11 runs, six of which were earned. Outfielder-turned-pitcher Kyler Burke allowed a run over 3 2/3 relief innings.
The Loons (7-7) and Peoria Chiefs (6-8) meet for the second game of a three-game series Friday night in Peoria. Game time is 7:30pm ET. Right-hander Arismendy Ozoria (0-0, 6.48) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Peoria lefty Willengton Cruz (0-2, 6.10). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN) and online at Loons.com.
