Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa (APRIL 18, 2012) - The River Bandits squandered a two-out, ninth-inning lead, tied the game on a two-out hit in the bottom of the ninth, and ultimately won on a walk-off walk issued by Clinton right-hander Wes Alsup to center fielder Nick Martini in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving Quad Cities a 5-4 win and a three-game sweep of the LumberKings Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

With a 3-2 ninth-inning lead, right-hander Heath Wyatt allowed a single and hit a batter before committing a balk that put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. After a groundout and an intentional walk to load the bases, Wyatt struck out pinch-hitter Guillermo Pimentel. Pinch-hitter Alfredo Morales then hit a grounder that got under the glove of second baseman Luis Mateo, who was charged with an error that gave the LumberKings their first lead of the night.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning, Mateo led off with a single up the middle. Shortstop Matt Williams struck out on three foul bunts, and Martini grounded to second as Mateo moved to second base. Then catcher Juan Castillo, who was hitless in his first eight at-bats, drove a double down the right field line that tied the game. After an intentional walk to designated hitter Colin Walsh, first baseman David Medina grounded out to second base to send the game to extra innings.

Left-hander Danny Miranda (1-0) struck out a batter, allowed a hit and got a ground-ball double play in a scoreless top of the 10th inning. Alsup (0-3) came on in the bottom half and issued a leadoff walk to third baseman Tyler Rahmatulla, who hit his first home run earlier in the game. A passed ball by Carlton Tanabe put Rahmatulla in scoring position before left fielder Anthony Garcia struck out on a check swing. Right fielder Roberto Reyes was intentionally walked, and Mateo drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases. Williams popped out to shallow right field before Martini took a 3-1 fastball high and outside to force in Rahmatulla for the winning run.

River Bandits left-hander Hector Hernandez and Clinton left-hander Jordan Shipers dueled into the seventh, and both pitchers were charged with two runs in 6 1/3 innings. Quad Cities scored in the fifth on a bases-loaded double play ground ball hit by Williams and again in the sixth on Rahmatulla's solo blast to the grassy berm beyond left field. LumberKings right fielder Jabari Blash answered with a solo shot of his own to lead off the seventh, and three batters later Hernandez was removed with runners at first and second base due to walks.

Right-hander Ethan Cole was asked to protect a 2-1 lead, but after getting a ground ball for the inning's second out, he threw a high wild pitch off the glove of Castillo that brought in the tying run.

Shipers began the seventh but was removed following Mateo's one-out single, and right-hander John Taylor took over. In a 2-2 game in the bottom of the eighth, Walsh was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk by Medina. With two outs, Garcia hit a ground ball down the first base line that was knocked down by first baseman Jharmidy De Jesus, but manager Luis Aguayo waved Walsh around from second, and he scored on the infield single to make it 3-2.

Wyatt started the ninth for Quad Cities but was unable to convert his second save in as many games. However, the River Bandits let him off the hook with their first walk-off win of 2012. River Bandits hitters drew a season-high eight walks while out-hitting the LumberKings nine to five.

Riding a four-game winning streak, the River Bandits (9-4) begin a six-game road trip against the Midwest League Eastern Division with three games each in Dayton, Ohio, and Bowling Green, Ky.
