Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - Trailing 6-0 and 7-1, the Kane County Cougars seemed on their way to a seventh consecutive loss to begin the second half, but the offense broke out late and railled all the way back to beat the Beloit Snappers, 8-7, in 10 innings on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Beloit (48-29, 5-2) jumped on top in the second as Renato Nunez struck out but reached on a wild pitch before scoring on a throwing error by starting pitcher Tayler Scott. More defensive trouble hampered the Cougars (31-42, 1-6) in the third as a Willson Contreras error led to a three-run frame.

Beloit tacked on two more in the fourth with Sam Roberts tripling and scoring on a two-bagger off the bat of Dayton Alexander. Brett Vertigan singled in Alexander to give the Snappers a six-run cushion. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars finally plated a run against Derek DeYoung with Jeimer Candelario scoring on an error by shortstop Daniel Robertson, one of five from the Snappers in the game.

Each team picked up a tally in the fifth inning as the Snappers carried a 7-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. Oliver Zapata jumpstarted the Cougars with a three-base hit before scoring on an Albert Almora single. Three batters later, Rock Shoulders launched a three-run homer to deep right, pulling the Cougars within one.

Sheldon McDonald and Jeff Antigua (3-1) each tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen for the Cougars, giving them a chance to even the score in the bottom of the eighth as Zapata singled, stole second and scored on another Almora single against Chris Lamb (1-2). It remained 7-7 until the 10th when Zapata got to Lamb again. This time, Zapata reached on a bunt single and advanced around to third on consecutive throwing errors before scoring the winning tally on a wild pitch.
