Big Lead Slips Away For Beloit in Kane County

GENEVA, IL - Oliver Zapata scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the tenth as the Kane County Cougars completed a six-run comeback and stole an 8-7 victory from the Beloit Snappers in Midwest League action on Thursday evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
This loss snaps Beloit's four game win streak and their record is now 48-29 (5-2 in the second half). Kane County moves to 31-42 (1-6 in the second half) in 2013 after finally getting their first second half victory.
Zapata (3-4, 3 runs) began the inning facing lefty Chris Lamb (1-2) and laid down a bunt that was good for a hit. An error on the play put him on third and, when Lamb unleashed a wild pitch, Zapata trotted home. Jeffry Antigua (3-1) threw a trio of scoreless innings in relief to earn the W. This unusual walk-off was a fitting end to what was a crazy night of baseball.
The Snappers started the scoring in the second when Renato Nunez scored on a wild pitch. One inning later, they added three more, the first run coming on an error. Christopher Bositck drove in another run with a single and Bostick made the score 4-0 later in the frame, as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
With two outs in the fourth, a Sam Roberts triple sparked another rally. Dayton Alexander (2-4, RBI, run) then doubled in Roberts and Brett Vertigan followed with an RBI single. When the Cougars got an unearned run in the fourth, Beloit came right back with a run of their own, as John Wooten's RBI single gave his team a seemingly comfortable 7-1 lead.
Kane County's resurgence began innocently enough, with a Dan Vogelbach sacrifice fly netting a run in the fifth. Two innings later, still trailing by five, the Cougars offense came alive. Zapata led-off with a triple and dented home when Albert Almora (3-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs) singled two batters later. After an out and a walk, Rock Shoulders belted a three-run home run over the right field wall and what had been a 7-2 margin when the eighth started had now been shaved to 7-6.
One inning later, Zapata and Almora teamed up to tie the score. Zapata beat out an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and, with two outs, Almora reached on another infield hit and Zapata came across to tie the game. Soon after, Zapata came across to win it.
The series finale will be another 6:30pm game, this one on Friday night. The Snappers will try to bounce back and take three out of four behind RHP Dakota Bacus (6-2, 3.95 ERA) while the Cougars and LHP Michael Heesch (3-5, 3.73 ERA) go for a split.
