Grand Rapids, Mich. - Dayton starting pitcher Sal Romano and three relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-0 on Thursday night. The two clubs have split the first two games in the series, each posting a shutout win.

Romano (5-7) fired six strong innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and three walks while striking out five. Wandy Peralta, Kyle McMyne, and Ben Klimesh each tossed a scoreless frame in relief of Romano. It was the Dragons third shutout victory of the season.

The Dragons broke the scoreless tie in the sixth when Seth Mejias-Brean scored on a two-out passed ball. The Dragons then scored four runs in the seventh to extend their lead. Tanner Rahier started the rally with a bunt single and Joe Hudson doubled over the head of the right fielder to move Rahier to third. Brent Peterson walked to load the bases and Daniel Pigott followed with a line drive sacrifice fly to center that scored Rahier to make it 2-0. Zach Vincej then hit a spinning bouncer past the first baseman into right field for a run-scoring single as Hudson scored from third. Peterson raced around to third on the play and when the throw came in wildly from West Michigan right fielder Zach Kirksey, Peterson scored and Vincej went to third. Jesse Winker followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Vincej and make it 5-0.

The Dragons collected 10 hits. Vincej went 3 for 5 and is batting .545 in the second half. Pigott also had two hits. The Dragons have had at least 10 hits in six of their last seven games.

The Dragons (4-4) battle the Whitecaps (5-3) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the rubber match of a three-game series. Ismael Guillon (3-6, 6.24) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Endrys Briceno (4-4, 4.18). The Dragons next home game is July 4th vs. the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Notes: Junior Arias picked up his 37th stolen base of the season to move into a tie for second on the Dragons all-time single season list. Noochie Varner stole 37 in 2002. The club record is 103, by Billy Hamilton in 2011.
