Chiefs Hold Off Bandits, Comeback to Win 5-4

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs bent but did not break after forcing the Quad Cities River Bandits to strand seven on base in their 5-4 win over their rivals from Davenport on Thursday night. With the victory the Chiefs ran their record to 41-33 on the year and 3-4 in the second half of the season heading into Friday's series finale.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning off Jamaine Cotton. After Breyvic Valera and Ildemaro Vargas walked, Jacob Wilson moved Valera to third on a fly out to right field. Jordan Walton drove in Valera with a sacrifice fly to right, and Wisdom moved Vargas to second with a single. Vargas scored on an error putting the Chiefs up 2-0. Quad Cities answered a pair in the top half of the second inning against Kyle Helisek. Rio Ruiz led off with a walk and was driven in on a Terrell Joyce double. Joyce came around to score on a Valera throwing error, tying the game at 2-2 before Helisek escaped the inning with three straight outs.

The Chiefs broke the tie in the fourth inning with three runs. With one out Jesus Montero singled and was driven home by a Nick Martini double. Valera tripled to center to score Martini for a 4-2 lead. Vargas laid down a successful squeeze bunt to score Valera and put the Chiefs up 5-2 and run Cotton from the game.

The River Bandits got one of those runs back in the top of the seventh inning. With one out Brian Blasik singled off Michael Aldrete and stole second. Teoscar Hernandez tripled to right field to drive in Blasik and cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3. Aldrete struck out Jordan Scott for the second out, and Zach Russell came in to retire Carlos Correa to strand Hernandez at third.

The River Bandits scored once more in the eighth inning against Russell. With one out Terrell Joyce homered to left field to trim the Chiefs lead to 5-4. The Chiefs closed out the River Bandits in the ninth inning. After giving up a leadoff walk, Robert Stock got Blasik to pop out before hitting Hernandez in the back. With two on and one out Scott grounded into a 4-6-3 double play and secure the Chiefs 5- 4 win.

Helisek (6-2) pitched five innings giving up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one. Aldrete tossed 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on two hits while fanning two. Russell surrendered one run on one hit in 1 1/3 innings while striking out one in his Chiefs debut. Stock pitched a scoreless ninth inning on no hits and one walk while hitting a batter.

Notes: With the win Helisek is 2-0 against Quad Cities this season and leads the Chiefs with six wins...The sacrifice by Vargas was his team-leading seventh this season... Nick Martini's second inning triple was his first of the season and came on his 23rd birthday... Valera scored two runs giving him a team-leading 45 this season... Martini also notched his 11th multi-hit game this season... With two more runs the Chiefs now have 50 total runs in the first frame this season, more than any other inning... The Chiefs are 32-10 when their opponents score four runs or less... Stock is now a perfect 3-for-3 in save attempts... Russell made his Chiefs debut by forcing Correa into a ground out with a runner in scoring at third base to end the seventh inning... For the second night in a row the Chiefs ended a game on a double play...
