CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two 3-run innings and a combined 1-hitter by Christian Powell and Tyler Jones pushed the Kernels to a 9-0 win over the Burlington Bees on Thursday night. The Kernels have won seven straight games to open the second half.
The Kernels had the bases loaded with no outs in the 1st, but only pushed across 1 run via a Max Kepler walk. Seven batters came to plate in the inning. Burlington starter Tyler DeLoach struck out the side.
Jorge Polanco connected for a 3-run home run in the 2nd that also scored Jeremias Pineda and Niko Goodrum. Polanco had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with the long ball plus two singles and 4 RBI.
The Kernels pushed across another 3 runs in the 4th, highlighted by a 2-RBI single by Tyler Grimes. Eight batters came to the plate in the frame.
The Kernels in the 5th scored 2 more runs with Polanco recording an RBI single and Hicks an RBI double. For Hicks, that's now 73 RBI on the season, just 1 shy of the MiLB lead. He also extended his hit streak to 13 games, a season high.
Williams finished 3-for-5 with 2 triples and 3 runs scored. Goodrum reached base all 5 times, including 4 walks and 3 runs scored. Chevy Clarke recorded the Bees' only hit, a sharp single through the right side.
Powell (2-1) didn't allow a hit through 5.1 innings. He exited after 6, yielding no runs while walking 5 and striking out 4. Jones went the final 3 innings out of the bullpen for his 5th save, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out 2.
DeLoach (1-1) exited after 3, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6. Reliever Aaron Newcomb allowed 5 runs in 3.2 innings before Jairo Diaz threw 1.1 hitless and scoreless innings.
