Burlington Bees News Release

The bats were extremely quiet for the Burlington Bees on Thursday night, as Christian Powell and Tyler Jones combined on a one-hit shutout to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 9-0 win at Perfect Game Field.

Tyler DeLoach (1-1) entered Thursday's game having given up two runs in 12 innings, but he faced the league's best offense, who made him work all night long. DeLoach lasted three innings, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks.

The southpaw danced out of trouble in the first, loading the bases with no outs. He struck out Dalton Hicks and Tyler Grimes, but walked Max Kepler to bring home a run. Michael Quesada struck out to end the frame.

In the second, DeLoach wasn't as fortunate. Jorge Polanco belted a three-run home run to give the Kernels (47-28, 7-0) an early 4-0 lead over the Bees (27-45, 1-6).

Aaron Newcomb allowed five runs in his 3.2 innings, surrendering three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Christian Powell (2-1) was absolutely incredible for the Kernels, allowing one hit in six innings. The lone knock came on a single to right field by Chevy Clarke. Tyler Jones came in to fire three perfect innings for his fifth save of the year.

Andrew Ray's streak of five straight games with a home run came to an end, but he will try to start a new streak when Ryan Crowley opposes Josue Montanez at 6:35 p.m. on Friday night.
