Cougars Blanked Again

Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars' offense, ranked third in the Midwest League in team batting average, has hit a lull the past two games. Returning home from a seven-game road trip, the Cougars were shut out 4-0 Tuesday night at Elfstrom Stadium by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 5.297 fans. Starter Jeff Gray pitched six innings, and the bullpen duo of Brad Kilby and Joe Newby held the Rattlers in check, but the offense produced only five hits and left eight men stranded.

Wisconsin scored their first run in the third against Gray and added three in the fourth to pad the lead for their left-hander Justin Thomas (4-3), who tossed six innings, gave up three hits, walked two and fanned five to get the win. Gray (2-4) didn't make many mistakes but suffered the loss from four runs and six hits over six frames. He walked one and struck out five.

Jeff Baisley, after missing the past three games with a minor left hand injury, returned to the lineup with a double and single in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to six consecutive games in which he's played, and Justin Sellers walked and singled to lead the small offensive attack. Kilby worked two scoreless relief inning before Joe Newby posted a perfect ninth.

The Cougars (20-18), who entered the game a half game behind Peoria for first place in the Western Division, try to snap their three-game losing streak on Wednesday at noon CDT. Jason Ray (1-1, 5.40) will pitch against Paul Fagan (1-3, 5.66) for Wisconsin (17-21).
