MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

Swing scuffle to loss in Cedar Rapids

May 16, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities have seen nothing but rain and losses lately, as their tough stretch continued with a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Swing have not won since May 10 at Wisconsin, suffering three defeats and four rainouts over that span.

Tuesday night's game could not entirely escape Mother Nature either, as a short rain shower delayed first pitch 37 minutes. Quad Cities (15-21) went on to lose their third consecutive ballgame - their longest such streak of the year - and fall to their lowest point of the season at six games below .500. Cedar Rapids (19-20) used the victory to rebound from a tough series in Clinton that saw the Kernels drop three of four.

After allowing only one run over his previous three starts, Kyle Sadlowski found nothing but trouble in the bottom of the second inning. He hit his first two batters of the season to open the frame, and after they each advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch, a walk loaded the bases with nobody out. With an 0-2 count, everybody advanced one base on a bloop single by Marco Albano. Stantrel Smith followed with the big blow of the inning, scalding a ball the other way deep to right-center field that went as a bases-clearing triple. When the relay throw was bobbled by Daniel Nelson at second, the error allowed Smith to trot home for a four-run play, giving Cedar Rapids an early 5-0 edge.

In the top of the third, Quad Cities got two of those runs back. Nelson led off the frame with his second professional home run, after hitting his first on opening day of this season on April 6 at Kane County. Colby Rasmus followed with his second single of the night, and moved into scoring position on a base hit by Bryan Anderson. Randy Roth then crushed a ball into deep right-center, but was robbed of extra bases by a diving Brad Coon in the alley. Rasmus tagged up and moved to third on the play, scoring later in the frame on a two-out passed ball to bring the Swing to within 5-2.

But that was all Quad Cities could come up with. Cedar Rapids added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings, putting the finishing touches on their series opening win.

Sadlowski (2-1) took the loss for the first time this season, allowing five runs in only 1.1 innings of work. The righthander hit his first two batters of the year and issued two walks, allowing three hits and recording only one out in the bottom of the second despite facing seven hitters.

Matt Trent turned in a sharp relief outing, striking out five in two frames while allowing only one baserunner. Trent was one of four Swing relievers to enter the ballgame, as they together combined to toss 6.2 innings while allowing just two unearned runs.

Stephen Marek (4-1) was impressive in victory for the Kernels, lasting seven innings while allowing only two runs - one earned - on five hits. The former Junior College standout struck out a season-high seven batters and walked two, effectively blowing his fastball by Swing hitters all night long.

UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will be in Cedar Rapids for game two of the four-game series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 beginning at 6:15 p.m.
