Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 16, 2006) - Miguel Vega's two-run home run in off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Burlington Bees (15-21) their first lead on their way to a 4-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (23-14) at Community Field tonight. The Bees have won three in a row for the first time this season and Vega is 7-10 with five RBI combined in the three victories. Tonight was the Bees first game in three days after being rained out in four of the last five nights.
Bees' starter Carlos Rosa (3-3) retired the first nine batters, striking out four, to begin the game tonight, but the Lugnuts still scored the first run in the top of the fourth inning. Sean Shoffit led off with a single and scored on a one-out double by Cory Patton to the wall in left. Those would be the only two hits for Lansing in the entire game as Rosa worked through 6.2 innings, walked two, and matched his season-high with six strikeouts for his second straight win. Eliezer Garcia and Chris Hayes each faced two batters and retired them both. Gilbert De La Vara struck out the side and hit a batter in the top of the ninth to finish off the game for his team-leading fifth save. De La Vara has earned a save in each of his last four outings.
Vega's home run accounted for the only two runs against Lansing starter Chi-Hung Cheng (5-3) who lost his second consecutive start. Cheng allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out a season-high eight through six innings. Sean Stidfole finished the final two innings and gave up the Bees' final two runs in the eighth. Ethien Santana led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored as Chris McConnell laid down the bunt on the suicide squeeze play. After Patton made a great diving catch in left-center to rob Mario Lisson of a hit, McConnell stole second and scored on a single by Kiel Thibault to complete the rally. Thibault and Vega are tied for second on the team with 16 RBI apiece.
The Bees and Lugnuts continue this series tomorrow morning at 11:30 AM for the annual Honor Roll Day at Community Field for middle and high school aged students from across Southeast Iowa and Western Illinois sponsored by the Great River Medical Center, Hy-Vee, Sterzing's, Burlington Pepsi, Vista Bakery, and American Ordnance. The general public is also welcome to attend. The gates will open at 10:30. RH Michael Penn (1-1, 4.66) will start for the Bees against RH Kristian Bell (3-1, 4.38) for the Lugnuts. There will be no radio broadcast of tomorrow's game.
