Rays win a Pitchers Duel
May 16, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays won tonight by a score of 1-0 against the South Bend Silver Hawks. The game was moving at a steady pace before the rain came and delayed the game 58 minutes in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rays ace Wade Davis had another impressive showing before leaving after the rain delay. Davis pitched 5 innings and gave up only two hits while striking out 8 Silver Hawks. Wade lowered his earned run average to 1.08.
Kevin Lynn came in after the rain delay and picked up the win as he pitched three innings allowing two hits and fanning a pair. Greg Dupas picked up his tenth save of the year by tossing a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
The Rays lone run came in the eighth inning. John Matulia started the frame by getting on by a fielding error by the South Bend first baseman, Bryan Byrne. Matulia then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Bethel. J.T. Hall then struck out swinging and South Bend intentionally walked Garrett Groce hoping for a force play. That was a big mistake. Christian Lopez singled to right center field chasing in Matulia for the game winning run.
The Rays and Silver Hawks face off again tomorrow morning at 11:05 am. Wednesday's game is Education Day and a Business Person's Special at C.O. Brown. Area school groups will be in attendance to enjoy the Rays as well as local business people that will spend their lunch hour with the Rays and can receive a voucher that includes a game ticket, a lunch that includes their choice of a hamburger, jumbo hot dog, or bratwurst with Better Made chips and Pepsi for only $10.
