Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - Behind some early inning runs and a complete game effort by starter Burke Badenhop, the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Peoria Chiefs 6-1 in the first game of a four-game set Tuesday night at O'Brien Field.
The Whitecaps showed some pop scoring first in inning number one. With two outs and nobody on, Matthew Joyce singled on a linedrive to left. The next batter, Michael Holliman, pulled a homer just over the yellow line in right to make it a 2-0 game.
Mark Reed provided the only offense for the Chiefs in the second when he blasted a solo shot into right field to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
West Michigan added to their lead in the third. Due to an error that allowed Pedro Cotto to slide in safely at second on an attempted steal, the Whitecaps got another life with two outs and made starter Scott Taylor pay as Joyce roped a base hit to center to score Cotto. Two batters later, Dusty Ryan added an RBI single of his own to bring to the score to 4-1.
The Whitecaps added even more insurance in the ninth. Jeramy Laster hit an RBI double then came in to score on Cory Middleton's run scoring single making it 6-1.
Taylor picked up the loss going six innings giving up four runs, just two of them earned, on seven hits, striking out two. Justin Rayborn came on to throw two spotless innings of relief. Reliever Jeff Teasley gave up a run in his inning of work. Badenhop got the win going all nine frames allowing just one run on five hits striking out five.
