CornBelters Take Win over Rockford

LOVES PARK - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, won their second straight contest over the Rockford RiverHawks, a 4-1 victory on Thursday night at RiverHawks Stadium.

The CornBelters went onto the scoreboard first in the second inning. Sam Judah walked to lead off the frame followed by a base hit from J.B. Brown, and Judah scored when Bubby Williams' sacrifice attempt was misplayed at first base. Andrew Cohn walked to load the bases, and Bobby Rinard drove home Brown and Williams with two-out single through the right side to give the Belters a 3-0 lead.

The RiverHawks countered in the third when Justino Cuevas led off with a base hit, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored with a two-out single to right by Javier Herrera to cut the Belters' lead to 3-1 going to the fourth inning.

The Belters added an insurance run in the eighth after Bubby Williams doubled and went to third on a fielder's choice, then scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 4-1.

Drew Provence (2-1) completed seven innings of eight-hit ball with two walks and seven strikeouts for the win. Rich Mascheri pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save. Ziggie VanderWall (5-4) threw six innings in defeat.

The series and brief road trip concludes on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the CornBelters send right-hander Tyler Lavigne (4-5, 4.76 ERA) against RiverHawks lefty Brad Schnitzer (0-1, 12.46 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 6:50. The CornBelters then come home for a three-game series against the River City Rascals with a 6:30 p.m. single game on Saturday and a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday.
