JOLIET SLAMMERS (26-35) @ SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS (36-25)

Thursday, July 26 - 6:30 p.m. CT

Schaumburg Boomers Stadium - Schaumburg, IL

Game #62 - Road Game #29 (26-35), (14-14)

RHP #39 Tommy Mendoza (3-4, 4.95 ERA) vs. RHP #25 Alex Rivers (1-1, 6.60 ERA)

For Starters.

Tommy Mendoza is coming off a rough outing on July 21 against the Windy City ThunderBolts. He went four innings, giving up five runs on four hits. The right-hander is looking for his first win since June 14. He is 0-3 with three no-decisions since then. This is the first time Mendoza has faced Schaumburg. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.

Abel is able.

Abel Nieves leads the Slammers in all three Triple Crown categories with a.370 batting average, six home runs and 35 RBI. His .370 average is tied for first in the entire Frontier League. He's hit safely in 18 of the last 19 contests for Joliet.

Locked down.

Last night was the fourth time Joliet has been shutout in 2012. They've shutout the opposition only once this season.

Workhorse.

Geoff Brown leads the Slammers in appearances as he's pitched in 29 games this season. The rookie out of the University of Washington has a 3.30 ERA in 30 innings.

Mashing Maunus.

Abel Nieves has been the talk of the team this season with his .500 batting average with runners in scoring position but Kyle Maunus is quietly second on the team with a .340 average in that scenario.

Save me.

Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is tied for the league lead with 15 saves on the year in 16 attempts.

Falling behind early.

The opponent has scored first against the Slammers 41 times this season. Joliet is 14-27 when that happens. The Slammers are 12-8 when they score first.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 8-27 in games when they make an error. They are 18-8 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 19-10, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 4-23.
