Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, exploded with double-digit runs and hits for the second straight night in a 13-4 win over the Gateway Grizzlies on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.
Early offense gave the CornBelters a lead in the first inning as they loaded the bases with a walk, an error and a hit and plated three times on a two-run single by Aaron Dudley for his eighth and ninth RBIs of the series and a single by Richard Lucas.
The Grizzlies countered in the second with lead-off home run by Michael Wing onto the left field lawn, followed by a two-out wild pitch to score Ben Waldrip from third base to cut the Belters lead to 3-2. The frame continued with a walk to Madison Beaird, who scored on a two-out triple to the left field corner by Michael Johnson to even the contest at 3-3.
The Belters lived up to their name in the third inning, batting around and scoring four runs on an RBI single by Jhiomar Veras and a monster two-run, 450-foot home run by Dudley deep into the picnic area beyond right field registered as the longest homer in Corn Crib history.
Gateway got a run back in the fifth with a one-out, solo line drive homer inside the right field foul pole by Kale Kiser to cut the Normal lead to 7-4.
The CornBelters responded in their fifth with a lead-off double by Ozney Guillen and a two-out RBI double just inside the third base bag by Pat McKenna, followed by a single by Mike Schwartz to plate McKenna and another RBI base hit from Sam Judah to build the lead to 10-4. McKenna's two-run single extended the advantage to 12-4, and a Lucas RBI knock in the seventh pushed the lead to 13-4.
Bobby Shore (4-5) worked six innings of five-hit ball, walking four and striking out two while surrendering all four runs, picking up his first win since June 29. Aaron Newcomb (9-6) lasted two innings and took the loss.
The Belters travel to Rockford for a three-game weekend series before returning for the final home stand of the season, a nine-game stretch beginning Tuesday against the Schaumburg Boomers. On Friday at Rockford, the Belters will send righty Mike Schweiss (3-2, 6.40 ERA) to the mound while the Aviators will hand the ball to right-hander Nick Grim (0-2, 6.30).
