Joliet Slammers News Release

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-picked up a 2-1 win over Lake Erie on Thursday night in a good all-around team effort .

The Slammers scored in the 1st inning on a RBI single from Matt Weaver. Joliet starter Matt Costello pitched well despite not having his best control. He benefitted from three key double plays from his defense, as he walked five in the 1st four innings. He also struck out four in the 1st six frames and allowed just one run on one hit through five. Craig Hertler had a sacrifice fly for Lake Erie in the 3rd inning for their early run. Joliet took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th on a RBI single from Russell Moldenhauer, his team-best 55th run-batted-in on the year. Costello finished up allowing that one run on four hits through six innings for the victory, before Jordan Wellander came on in relief. Wellander retired all six he faced in two innings of work and then David Kubiak retired the three he faced in the 9th inning to pick up the save. Costello was the 17th starter for Joliet and was the first Slammers starter to earn a win since August 10th. Kubiak picked up save number three of the season in his third attempt since taking over the closer's role on July 29th. Prior to the game, Joliet starter Travis Bradshaw was placed on the 7-day injured list retroactive to August 12th. The victory ended a Joliet three-game losing streak.

In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $250 to lucky fan, Christina Benson, as part of their Amazing August promotion. Each home game in August will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.

The Slammers now hit the road to play three games against the Florence Freedom in suburban Cincinnati. Game one on Friday begins at 5:35pm central time. Joliet returns home to play Rockford in a three-game set that begins with a 2-dollar Tuesday on August 19th at 7:05pm. Slammers action this summer is broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com.
